At the Eviction Lab, we work hard to provide accurate data about the scale of housing displacement in our communities. To do this, we collaborate with courts, local partners, researchers, and data-focused organizations. Our daily work involves gathering eviction data, verifying its accuracy, and presenting it in accessible ways for all who rely on it.
However, eviction data remain difficult to collect, and occasionally we encounter errors or missing information. When we identify these issues, we work to correct them and communicate any necessary updates. This recently occurred when, in collaboration with our partners at the Child Poverty Action Lab, we discovered inconsistencies in eviction filing data for Dallas.
Dallas County transitioned to a new internal court filing system in late 2022. Following this update, our systems missed between 15% and 20% of filings. This undercount affected data from late 2022 through 2024 and, in total, led to us missing 29,061 filed cases. This has now been corrected in our Eviction Tracking System and across related content on our website. All updated reports include a posted correction.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We’re happy to answer questions about the updated data. If you notice any discrepancies or want to flag potential issues, please reach out to us at research@evictionlab.org.
